Counseling for Women
It was my experience mentoring women as a campus missionary that led me to pursue my degree in counseling, and to that end I have focused my practice on issues common to women. My primary areas of practice have been helping women heal from sexual trauma, navigate relationships, and overcome depression, anxiety and body image issues. As a counselor I begin from the worldview that we are all deeply cared for by a God whose image we bear, with the end goal of counseling being to better know him and understand our place in this story he is writing.
Counseling for Children and Adolescents
Developmentally, children process trauma, bullying, loss, and other life stressors differently than adults. Younger children may feel intense emotions but not have words to describe those emotions. This can be confusing and frightening.
Depending on age, presenting concern, and developmental level, I use a mixture of play therapy, music therapy, and talk therapy to create a safe space for kids to explore and understand what they are feeling. A typical session may include structured activities that I have planned out prior to the session as well as free play.
Missionary Counseling
Missions has been one of my passions since I was a teen. I have both been a part of and led numerous short term trips all over the world, was on the leadership team of a church plant, and served for four years as a support-based campus missionary with Great Commission Ministries (now known as Reliant). Through all of these experiences I have come to understand the need for those going to the field to have their hearts prepared for the warfare they will encounter, and to be thoroughly grounded in who their God is and who they are in relation to him. I also personally understand the need for support both in the field and when returning from the field. To this end I provide counseling services to missionaries in each of these stages.
